The extent of this work varies – some clients prefer us to project manage the whole process, whilst others enjoy a hands-on approach, learning how to complete some of the simpler tasks themselves. There are occasions where a collaborative approach is required, where we work alongside modern architects and builders to help create sustainable buildings combining both traditional and modern techniques. With careful planning, even the most complex conservation works can be carried out on time and to budget.
Experience has shown us that modern living can be successfully combined with period homes. By using the techniques and materials used in their original design, the thermal performance of solid walled buildings is improved dramatically. They can be cosy and warm in the winter, whilst remaining cool in the summer months. By incorporating carefully chosen modern additions, such as underfloor heating, sheep wool insulation and secondary glazing, this thermal performance can be improved even further.
Our team rebuilds solid walls using hot lime mixes and protects these walls with the appropriate lime finishes developed over centuries here in West Wales. Every building is individual in its needs and there is a wide palette of lime materials and techniques available to meet those needs. Our conservation skills also include roofing, chimney and decorating works. We work closely with local joiners, heating engineers, electricians and plumbers to ensure that they are able to contribute successfully to our projects.
Our team is sensitive to the needs of the buildings being worked on, whether they be imposing Georgian villas or modest vernacular cottages. In this part of Wales, methods and materials used in the construction of both were surprisingly similar.
