Building
We are a team of craftsmen who have saved over 200 buildings across Wales
Over the past 20 plus years we have saved over 200 of them. Through our courses, PR and consultancy, we have inspired owners of hundreds more to do the right thing to their solid walled structures. At the heart of this work is lime, a material which has been used in building for millennia.
Building with lime requires an understanding of the material, the peculiarities of local building traditions and keeping an eye on the weather. The local climate here in West Wales has shaped the way in which people create and maintain our buildings. As in Ireland and the West Coast of Scotland, there are lime finishes developed specifically to cope with the wind-driven rain.
These finishes are as relevant to a small vernacular cottage as to a grand castle. These have been used over centuries to help solid walled structures maintain their own equitable balance of moisture by the simple process of evaporation. Lime is vapour permeable – when conditions allow, moisture in the wall can leave as vapour – just like hanging washing out to dry.
It is a very straightforward concept where building works with nature, rather than fighting against it by attempting to waterproof with modern, impermeable materials like cement and plastic paints.
With over 20 years experience, TLC has a proven track record.
Our select team of local craftspeople combine hands-on experience of building conservation in Wales with teaching, consultancy and specifying traditional materials.
